Our dentist, Dr. Arpan Patel, and dental team understand that winter still seems so far away. We have the rest of summer and all of the fall to get ready for winter. Well, that’s exactly what we want to help you do. Before winter arrives, we want to teach you how to protect your smile so you can maintain a top-notch oral health while you participate in winter sports and activities.

The first thing you should do is wear a mouth guard. A mouthguard is a strong appliance that can protect your teeth when hard, forceful objects hit the mouth. This is because it consumes most of the pressure and keeps it away from the smile. There are many guards you can choose from, like stock mouthguards, boil-and-bite mouthguards, and custom-made mouthguards.

The second thing you should do is avoid blows to the face as much as possible. This might be tough when you’re skiing, sledding, snowboarding, or even having a snowball fight. Sometimes you fall or hit into people, trees, and other objects. Try to avoid that as much as possible. However, if these accidents do happen and you’re wearing a mouthguard, your smile can be protected.
