Your oral health is important to Dr. Arpan Patel and associates, which is why we ask you to take the recovery period following a bone graft treatment seriously. If you fail to heal properly, you can face serious consequences. So, if you’ve just recently restored your underlying bone with a bone graft in Langhorne, Pennsylvania, our dental team encourages you to do the following things:
Step No. 1: Stop the bleeding and reduce swelling by keeping a clean gauze pad over the surgical site. Apply pressure to the pad for about an hour and then discard it. It’s also best to ice the area by cooling it with an ice pack in 30-minute intervals for the first 24 to 48 hours.
Step No. 2: Take medications to help with the pain and potential infections. Usually, your dentist will suggest or prescribe these medications to you. When taking the meds, make sure to follow the instructions closely. Also, don’t stop taking the antibiotics until they are gone and don’t take the pain medication on an empty stomach. Doing so can lead to nausea.
Step No. 3: Watch your diet for the first 24 hours after surgery. It’s best to stick to a soft-foods diet and drink plenty of liquids. When eating, chew away from the surgical area so you don’t affect the incision or stitches. When drinking, avoid using straws. Straws tend to dislodge the clot and encourage bleeding.
Step No. 4: Rest as much as you can for two to three days after surgery. This will help you recover faster.
